Do Girls Like Playing The TERA Online Game

I am a girl gamer and wondered if TERA online would appeal to girls. Here is my review of the game. My first thought was that TERA Online is a typical game that has been designed with guys in mind. One quick look at the female game characters is enough to send a feminist running, but I wanted to give the game a chance.

Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks Tactics

Posted: 15 May 2012 10:37 AM PDT

Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks are two extremely similar battlegrounds. They have the exact same objective, which is to take the enemy team’s flag from their base and capture it for your own. There’s a lot going on between captures, such as fighting in the middle of the field, returns of flags, less talented players with no resilience grabbing the flag only to get demolished in a second, you know, things of that nature.

?ern? ?aj s citronem: Food, drink, more food and drink and naked …

On Sunday I turned 32 *blows party horn* – hurrah! And what better way to celebrate than to head down to the local “Wellness” (sorry, I can’t bare that word and do not accept it as proper English, so have to put it in inverted commas) Centre and get naked with lots of unknown Czech men and women!

Well, that wasn’t my ultimate plan. I shall start from the beginning. Having been away for a couple of weekends, I decided it would be nice to spend my birthday weekend in Brno. On Saturday we went to the ?pilberk Food Festival. Sadly, the weather was chilly, windy and rainy so I couldn’t take the sort of photos I had wanted to. Instead, I decided to tuck into all the fabulous food that I could and try a good selection of wines. You will just have to take my word for it that it all looked and tasted delicious! This was the first Food Festival in Brno and I hope they put it on again next year, as it was a great opportunity to try small, yet excellent dishes from some top-notch restaurants in Brno.

On Sunday, we had a lovely birthday brunch at home. My OH bought me a nice bottle of Mucha Sekt, which we made Buck’s Fizz out of and drank with sweet things to start off with: yoghurt, raisin brioche and melon and later had scrambled eggs with sausages and baguette. Scrumptious.

Fortified with food and wine, we set off on the tram to Hotel Santon. It is situated next to the Lake in Bystrc. From the outside it doesn’t look like much (a bit communist-era), but once inside the “Wellness” area is very modern and has clearly been recently refurbished. I decided to book in for a 30 minute massage (bliss), a 20 minute private jacuzzi session?(invigorating)?followed by 90 minutes in the sauna and pool area (aaah and argh!).

Before we went there, I had of course shaved my legs in preparation. However, it suddenly occurred to me, that it might be customary to be naked in the sauna in the Czech Republic. This only sprung to mind, as I had once had a funny experience in Germany with a friend where we both turned up at the spa only to be told that we could not possibly wear our swimming costumes, “as this would offend others”. Sure enough, when we went to the saunas at Hotel Santon (of which there are 4) there was a little “no swimming costumes” sign on the door. You are expected to remove your swimwear and wrap a sheet around yourself, which they provide. Once inside the sauna, you sit naked upon your sheet.

The saunas are mixed, but personally I don’t have a problem with this. Many Brits, and I think Americans, would find it unthinkable to sit naked in a sauna with unknown chaps and chapettes, but you soon realise that there is nothing sexual or seedy about the environment. It is a normal and healthy thing in Germany and the Czech Republic to be naked and have no qualms about it when relaxing and enjoying health treatments.

The saunas were very good: one very hot and very dry one (Finsk?), one less hot and dry one, one very humid one (Tropick?) and another one outside with a big dish of lavender oil in the middle. This one was opposite the ice cold plunge pool, so I braved it and jumped straight in afterwards. Gasp, gasp!

We both had a really nice afternoon at the spa and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for somewhere quieter and reasonably priced. I was worn out from all this relaxation and promptly fell asleep when I got home – a sleepy but happy birthday girl.

Amazing photo shows ‘swarm’ of stars

Tens of thousands of stars can be seen clustered together in a new image.

A ball of some of the oldest stars in the universe looks like a swarm of bees in a new view from an observatory in Chile.?

The photo, released today (May 9), was taken by a European Southern Observatory telescope and shows 100,000 stars crowded together in Messier 55, a globular star cluster located roughly 17,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius (The Archer). It is one of about 160 globular clusters orbiting the outskirts of our Milky Way galaxy.

Scientists suspect the stars in globular clusters formed from single clouds of gas that condensed to make stars around the same time, around 10 billion years ago. That makes these stars some of the most ancient known. As such, they provide valuable archaeological evidence about what the universe was like not long after the Big Bang is thought to have given rise to it.

“As this formative period was just a few billion years after the Big Bang, nearly all of the gas on hand was the simplest, lightest and most common in the cosmos: hydrogen, along with some helium and much smaller amounts of heavier chemical elements such as oxygen and nitrogen,” scientists with the European Southern Observatory wrote in a statement.

Astronomers estimate the universe is about 13.7 billion years old. In contrast, our own star, the sun, formed only 4.6 billion years ago, and is made of more complex, heavier elements that were around at this later epoch.

The new image was taken at the 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama desert.

The cluster Messier 55 (also known asNGC 6809) is easily visible through a small telescope, and stretches about two-thirds the width of the full moon across the sky. It was first observed in 1752 by French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, and later added by another French astronomer, Charles Messier, into his famous catalog of bright objects.

‘Survivor: One World’: How The Women Won

‘The guys — they had no unity,’ fourth-place finisher Christina Cha tells MTV News of scoring show’s first ever all-girl finale.
By Josh Wigler

Kim Spradlin isn’t the only “Survivor: One World” winner. OK, technically she is — that cool $1 million is firmly in her bank account — but the season’s four finalists can also take comfort in knowing that they made “Survivor” history together: For the first time in 24 seasons, there was not a single man left standing among the final five contestants.

The feat is all the more impressive considering where the women began. At the outset of “One World,” the two tribes were separated on gender lines, with the men of Manono showcasing their clear physical advantage with two early immunity wins. It certainly didn’t help that the women of Salani were turning on each other, with in-fighting dominating much of their air time in the season’s earliest episodes.

Eventually, the women pulled themselves together to stage one of the most impressive comebacks in “Survivor” history, knocking five men out in a row and cutting out the final male — the unforgettable Tarzan — one vote later. So after such a rocky start, how did Salani find the strength to rally together and get rid of the men?

“I think it’s because we had a rocky start, I believe that’s why we ended up with five women at the end,” Kim told MTV News at the “One World” finale on Sunday night. “We had to learn to trust each other. We really had to get each other’s backs and become a group.”

“There was a day when we all just stood around. We held each other’s hands. We were like, ‘You know what? We can do this,’ ” third-place finisher Chelsea Meissner said. “I think it was that first challenge we won against the guys, where they were really ahead of us and we came out of nowhere and won it. We all hugged and it was that moment where we realized, ‘We can do this. We can so do this.’ ”

Christina Cha, who finished the season in fourth place, credited the women’s success to the men’s willingness to cannibalize each other. “That was what I noticed about the guys — they had no unity,” she said. “The guys weren’t united from day one.”

Another factor, according to runner-up Sabrina Thompson: The men simply were not needed. “You don’t need a man in this game to come get [you] fire, to do this or do that,” she said. “Once we started winning challenges, we knew we could do this.”

In a season dominated by precisely one person, one would think that the plan to get rid of all of the men stemmed from winner Kim. But one of her fellow finalists remembers things differently.

“You know what? I’m going to take credit for this one Kim, OK?” fifth-place finisher Alicia Rosa weighed in, recalling the fall of the men with the same firecracker glee that made her such a memorable competitor all year long. “I [outlined] who the five girls were, from the beginning, and that we were going to wipe [the men] off the island. That, to me, was my biggest dream come true, to do that. I always said that on the island: ‘We have to do this. We have to do this. Do not play with those men. It is not going to happen! ‘”

Not to say that the self-proclaimed mastermind of the men’s demise isn’t without some regrets.

“I will say I wish Matt had used a little bit more of his Southern charm. Maybe he would’ve lasted a little bit longer,” Alicia laughed. “He was really nice to look at!”

The PTA arrives in Mexico’s schools

Parent-teacher associations are the face of the US public school system, but it is only recently that parents are starting to penetrate the hallways of Mexico’s schools.

When Karina Salda?a enrolled her first child in elementary school, she hoped for the kind of parent participation that didn’t exist when she was growing up. Her own school director was ?untouchable? to both teachers and students alike, Ms. Salda?a says.

But what she found was the same impenetrable wall that has long kept parents locked out of the public education system in Mexico ? where in some schools teachers don’t show up to class or are woefully underqualified, and where students drop out at high rates.

A decade later, however, with her second child now in sixth grade at the same school, Salda?a is busy most weeks at the Fray Matias de Cordova elementary school.? Located on a busy block in central Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, Salda?a is the parents’ representative on the official parent teacher council. ?There has been a cultural shift,? she says. ?They have involved us.?

Parents associations are the face of the US public school system. But in Mexico, although by law they have existed for years, it is only recently that parents are starting to penetrate the hallways of Mexico’s schools, not only helping to build infrastructure or raise money, but to demand that teachers show up to class and equip pupils with the basic skills they need to advance. And new research shows that such participation is having a positive impact on dropout rates and even test scores.

?Societal consciousness has grown about the necessity of including parents,? says Dolores Ramirez, the head of a program called School Management Support (AGE) under Mexico’s Ministry of Education that funds rural parents associations. ?Before, parents dropped their kids off and handed the responsibility of education to the school.?

For decades, parents in Mexico were disregarded. Many accepted a secondary role, deferring to teachers and principals. This is especially true in rural communities, where the schoolteacher is often the most educated member of the community and parents work long days, often with the help of their children. Many teachers once reckoned that schools were better off without parental interference.

Mexico’s efforts to reinforce parental roles in schools was part of the school decentralization movement that gained traction across the globe in the 1990s from New Zealand to the Netherlands, and Honduras to Hong Kong. After decentralizing its system in 1992, Mexico’s Ministry of Education gave new support to programs to help parents in rural and marginalized schools and later instituted councils of teachers, parents, and directors to help oversee compensatory funds.

?We thought it was better to keep them far away from the school,? says Marilu Sarmiento, the director of Fray Matias de Cordova, who was a teacher for 16 years before moving into administration. ?[Now], each day parents participate more.?

Ms. Sarmiento?s school bustles on a recent morning. One class is doing calisthenics, not far from the new tables Ms. Salda?a’s PTA constructed in December. They remodeled a cafeteria in August. Now they are planning to build a bigger boys’ bathroom and launch a general cleaning campaign. They also began a program in February called ?Return to School,? where parents lead the Monday school ritual of singing national and state hymns, and raising the Mexican flag.

Their work is voluntary and unpaid. In rural schools, parent participation has grown with the help of AGE, which began in 1996 in 5,200 schools, and has since expanded to 45,000 programs throughout Mexico today, says Ms. Ramirez.

Particularly active in large, rural states such as Chiapas, the AGE program gives small amounts of money, anywhere from $300 to $700 a year, to the school’s parent association, to plan projects like constructing bathrooms, painting buildings, or buying vital school supplies such as pencils. The program is an important resource, as school spending in the budget, which is generous 22 percent of total government expenditure, goes almost entirely to salaries, says Harry Patrinos, the lead education economist at the World Bank.

Mobile ? Facebook And Google Can?t Live With It And They Can?t Live Without It

zuckerbergThis week Facebook did a virtually unprecedented thing. In the middle of its IPO roadshow it modified its S1 filing in reaction to questions it had been being asked by analysts. The modification I refer to stated that Facebook wanted to acknowledge a trend; that trend is the declining ARPU (average revenue per user) being seen in its current quarter. This trend is being driven, Facebook said, by the growth in its usage on mobile platforms and its inability to monetize those platforms in the same way, or at the same rate, as its desktop/laptop offerings. The previous iterations of the S1 had all contained the possibility of this trend. Even the likelihood of it. But the actuality of the trend was noted here for the first time in the S1.

Facebook Fleshes Out Privacy Policy To Comply With Data Protection Audits, Will Hold Q&A On Monday

Facebook Terms and Policies Hub ImageToday Facebook will start sending the first of three billion notices to users about proposed changes to its privacy policy, which were made to comply with a Spring deadline for implementing recommendations from an audit by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner. The three biggest changes Facebook’s Chief Privacy Officer for Policy Erin Egan told me about when we spoke this morning are several clarifications of existing but sometimes vague policies:

  • A clarification regarding Facebook’s existing policy that it may use your data to serve you ads outside of Facebook.com while you’re on other websites
  • A detailed new chart of how Facebook uses cookies to improve Facebook but not track you across the web
  • A more detailed explanation of how in some cases Facebook will “retain [your] data as long as necessary to provide you services” whether that’s less or more time

Facebook’s goal is to make it as easy as possible for users to understand how their data is used, and how that’s changing. So?Facebook is also launching the?“Facebook Terms and Policies Hub” to house its 10 policy documents, including a redlined changes version?of today’s privacy policy (known as the Data Use Policy), and explanations of those changes. Facebook will hold a live-streamed Q&A about the changes on May 14th. Users will have seven days from now to give feedback on the changes before they’re?implemented barring major objections.
